Day 19: Seward, AK & Kenai Fjords National Park - Tuesday, 5/28/24

 Photo of the day:

Aialik Glacier

Lynda spotted a bald eagle on the rocks near out campsite this morning and got a great picture.

Today we took the National Park Tour through the Kenai Fjords company.  It was a 5.5 hour boat tour through Resurrection Bay and into Kenai Fjords National Park.  The weather forecasts were for dreary weather, but we were blessed with a day of almost all sun, mild winds, and small waves in the water.

We took the National Park Tour, which is the orangish line.

Our campground from the boat

As you can see, it was very windy on the boat.   At one point, Lynda's had blew off her head and got caught on the railing.  Amazingly, she was able to get around the other railing in time to retrieve it...but then was too nervous to put it back on - as you can tell from the silly picture below!

Along with much better-than-expected weather, we also had the great fortune to see many animals from the boat including
  • Coastal Mountain Goats
  • Humpback whales
  • Killer whales
  • Puffins
  • Bald eagle
  • Sea otters with their babies
  • Sea lions

A Coastal Mountain Got and baby on the rocks.  There were two babies, but only one is visible in the picture.

Cool pic and colors - photo cred @ Brittney

Beautiful blue skies and amazing scenery

Lynda (the Linebacker?!) and Dave - before the hat debacle

It was so cool how the geography/landscape kept changing!

Lunch was a burrito and some chips and salsa.
The warm burrito tasted good after being on the cold deck of the boat.

Humpback whale

Here's a video of the humpback whale.  Not a great video, but a video.

We saw multiple orcas too!

Another orca in the middle in front of the rocks

We didn't get close up to Holgate Glacier, but we did see it.

Holgate Glacier on the right

So pretty!

Dad (in the royal blue) and Carol (in the green) at the front of the boat

Sea otter in the left - not the best photo but a photo nonetheless!

Craig, who we met on the boat, thought we should do Hear no Evil, See no Evil, Speak no Evil...so we did!

The main glacier we got close to is Aialik Glacier.

Apparently, this glacier is one mile wide at the base.

We saw some pieces fall from the glacier into the water and were surprised by how loud it was.
The blue colors are so pretty!

When you are near these pieces of "brash ice", you can hear crackling.
We learned they call this sound "ice krispies".

Here's a video of the ice.

Could Lynda "be wearing any more clothes"?!"

Icebergs are pieces of ice that measure at least 5 meters across.  This looks like an ice sculpture!

brrrr

On the way back to Seward from the Aialik Glacier, we saw sea lions on No Name Island.

The branding is related to tracking the sea lions.  (They said they are much smaller when they are first branded as pups but they stretch as they grow.)

We had dinner at the Highliner Restaurant.  Fish (cod) and chips plus a Halibut sandwich fed us all.  They were both great.

Down the beach from our campsite is the start of the first Iditarod race when it use to go from Seward to Nome.

Tomorrow, we drive back to Anchorage to return the RV!

Total miles today: 4ish by car and many, many more by boat
