Day 0: Prologue

Here's a little bit about what this is all about...

Dave has organized several backpack/camping trips over the years, and we have talked about whether we would like to own an RV someday.  We started thinking that maybe a teardrop pull-behind would be cute but also talked about other choices too. We cannot remember how Dave learned about the Great Alaskan Holidays company, but whatever/wherever it was, a seed was planted.  Why not rent an RV to try it out plus see places we have never seen?

Great Alaskan Holidays is an RV company that rents and sells RVs in Anchorage.  Each year they need new RVs in Anchorage, so a brilliant marketing plan was hatched - why not have people pay them to drive the new RVs to Alaska for them?!  Renters/drivers get a reduced rate to drive to Alaska one-way and then fly home.  The RVs are from either north central Iowa (Winnebago) or north central Indiana (other manufacturers).  We were super happy our pick up was in central Iowa to save a day's travel.  The program is called the Great Alaskan Holidays Spring Adventure Package (SAP).

This is a fairly popular program, and since they only need so many RVs each year, there is usually a waiting list.  We signed up several years ago.  The first year we didn't make the list.  The next year was 2021, and the program was canceled due to COVID and the Canadian border not being open.  We eventually were selected but needed to delay another two years for higher priority activities like moving Alena and Brittney to their new locations and seeing Alena graduate Medical School.  2024 is our year, though, and we started planning around November 2023.

We are doing the Spring Adventure Package:

We are free to choose our own route and opted to keep the RV for 19 days-- the maximum number of days you can at the reduced rate.  After that, we will stay in Anchorage through the weekend to see a bit more of Alaska.  We are looking forward to Brittney, Dave's dad Steve and his wife Carol joining us for some of the time in Anchorage!
