Day 18: Homer, AK to Seward, AK - Monday, 5/27/24

 Photo of the day.

Exit Glacier Overlook at Kenai Fjords National Park

We were awakened at 6am to the sound of a bird walking across our roof and pecking at the bathroom vent. We fell back asleep until 7:00 and had our breakfast while waiting for the area's stores to open. We got some coffee at a little local coffee place called Mug Up and then wandered up and down the spit. It is super pretty out here.

We grabbed some freshly made mini donuts

...and made quick work of the bag.  Thanks for the donuts, Dad and Carol!

Hard to pass up a picture with a Big Bear!

Every shopping area needs a spot for non-shoppers.
(That is not even our Minnie Winnie RV - they are everywhere!)

Hmmm???

Here’s the bargain of the trip… Brittney forgot to pack her pajama bottoms. Lynda pointed out some boxers at a local store. They were in kid sizes and one pair was three dollars. When we got up to the register, the cashier told her it was five for the price of one. So she got five pairs of boxers for three dollars!

5 pairs for $3

During our walk, we saw this eagle perched on a lamp post.

Our first Bald Eagle of the trip.  This is a immature eagle.

After a couple souvenir purchases, we headed out to Seward. Here are a couple shots from views we stopped to look at along the way.

Redoubt Mountain - over 10,000 ft

You can see multiple volcanoes that are part of the Ring of Fire

On the way to Seward, we stopped at the Kenai Fjords National Park to take a hike to view the Exit Glacier.

This is the river valley created by the Exit Glacier

Pictures from the hike to the Glacier Overlook.

The Glacier Overlook trail was nice

Signs show how far the glacier has retreated over the years.  It is a lot 😞

Dave and Brittney decided to go a bit further than Steve, Carol and Lynda…

That's Brittney and Dave in the upper center

We crossed a small stream further up the path

Brittney and Dave didn't go to the top of the hike since it would have taken too much time.  They did get to another spot with a great view of the Exit Glacier.

In the parking lot at the Exit Glacier Visitor Center, we saw a row of Minnie Winnies.  These always catch our eye since we ran across them for 4,000+ miles.  These are all from the same rental company we used out of Forest City, Iowa.

We got to Seward and checked into our campsite for the night. Our campsite is on the water again, but a row back. This place is not quite the same party zone that it was last night (phew)… either because it’s a Monday night or because it draws a different crowd.

View out our front window at the camp site (at another Minnie Winnie!)

Some fjords a short ways off

A 5,000+ ft peak across the fjord

We got a chance to FaceTime with Alena and Oakley for a bit this evening. Wish they were here.

Missing Alena, Jake and Oakley

For dinner, we went to Seward Brewing Company. We were surprised to see a sticker from More Brewing in Villa Park by us!

At the top in the center is "More Brewing", a Villa Park, IL brewery.
That sticker is a long ways from home!

We took a walk along the waterfront in Seward at the end of the day.  Lynda spotted two seals swimming.  Dave didn't get much of a picture.

Trust us, it is a seal 🦭

We decided to call it an earlier night and retired to our respective sites for the night. We are in Seward for two nights in a row, so we get to do a bit more exploring tomorrow including a 5 1/2 hour boat trip into the National Park.

Total miles today: 200
