Day 4: Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND to Cut Bank, MT - Monday, 5/13

Picture of the Day

This little guy was manning the entrance/exit station of Theodore Roosevelt National Park this morning!

After leaving Theodore Roosevelt National Park, we drove north on Highway 85.  We saw tons of oil wells and lots of construction as the area grows with energy production.

After turning onto Highway 2 and heading west, we encountered a few of these "detours".  You drive off the road on a shoulder they built up with gravel.  Thankfully it was a short stretch for the RV.

Thankfully this storm stayed mostly to the north of us along Highway 2...and it did not block our first glimpse of some "mountains" called Sweet Grass Hills along the northern Montana border.  Several of the mountains were snow-capped.

We stopped at a McDonalds along Highway 2 to grab a coffee.  While there, 2 different people stopped us and chatted.  Very friendly people. One guy referred to Alaska as "Glacier on steroids", which makes us all the more excited to see it.

After determining there was not much to do in our original destination of Shelby, Montana (population 3246), we continued on another 23 miles to Cut Bank (population 3035) to check out Cut Bank Brewery and the coldest spot in the lower 48.  Turns out the brewery does not open until Memorial Day (would have been nice if their website mentioned this detail).  At least the penguin was there as promised!

Since it was super windy today and we only have 2 hours to our destination tomorrow, we found this campground for the night. The woman who runs it is very friendly, and the bathrooms and showers are clean.

Glacier Mist RV Park is a great little spot with a very friendly host.

We stopped at a local Albertson's for a few items and grabbed a local beer to enjoy at the end of the day.

Total distance traveled today: 478 miles.
